Ronde Barber is a current defensive back for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, the same team with which he has played his entire 15-year career in the NFL. Ronde is a threat to any quarterback, having intercepted many notable players like Brett Favre and Michael Vick. Ronde had a memorable 92-yard interception return for a touchdown in the 2002 NFC Championship game against quarterback Donovan McNabb and the Philadelphia Eagles. Ronde and the Bucs went on to win Super Bowl XXXVII in a 48–21 victory over the Oakland Raiders.
On December 11, 2005, in a game against the Carolina Panthers, Ronde became the first cornerback in the history of the NFL to record at least 20 interceptions and 20 sacks in his career. He became the ninth member of the 20/20 Club, joining linebackers Jack Ham, Donnie Edwards, Seth Joyner, Wilber Marshall, William Thomas and Ray Lewis and safeties Rodney Harrison, Brian Dawkins, and LeRoy Butler. Ronde is the active leader in defensive touchdowns scored with seven interception returns and four fumble returns. The only two players ahead of him on the all-time list for career defensive touchdowns are Darren Sharper and Hall of Famer Rod Woodson. Ronde also has scored a touchdown on a blocked punt, a blocked field goal attempt, and a punt return, recording 14 total touchdowns in the regular season and one in the postseason. He was voted onto the NFL 2000’s All-Decade Team roster at the cornerback position. On November 21, 2010, with a 21–0 win over the San Francisco 49ers, Ronde became the only player in NFL history with at least 25 sacks and 40 interceptions. His jersey and gloves from the game were subsequently retired to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton.
Before going pro, Ronde played football at the University of Virginia, alongside his twin brother, Tiki Barber. Ronde finished his career with the Cavaliers with 15 interceptions, the third-highest total in school history and just two shy of the UVA record. Ronde spent his freshman season as a redshirt player and emerged as the 1994 ACC Rookie of Year. Making an impressive cornerback, he made the All-ACC roster three times and received UVA’s Bill Dudley Award recognizing the team’s most outstanding first-year player. Ronde was rated as one of Virginia’s top five prospects and shared Male Athlete of the Year honors in the state with Tiki.
Off the field, Ronde is an author having co-written three books. Along with his brother, Tiki, Ronde wrote a children’s book titled “By My Brother’s Side” that was released during the 2004 season. A second book titled “Game Day” was published in the fall of 2005 and a third children’s book, “Teammates”, was released in the fall of 2006. Ronde filmed a breast cancer awareness public service announcement that aired on Lifetime during National Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October 2007. An avid golfer, Ronde has played in seven of the past eight Outback Pro Am golf tournaments. Ronde was named to The Sporting News’ 2003 and 2006 NFL’s 101 Best Players List.
