The Lakers might’ve been swept out of the NBA playoffs, but Los Angeles is always in the spotlight.

Today we’ll take a look at Michael Cooper, a member of the “Showtime” Lakers of the 1980′s:

1. Michael Cooper was born in Los Angeles, CA, and attended Pasadena City College before transferring to the University of New Mexico, where he played from 1976 to 1978 and was named first team All-Western Athletic Conference.

2. An extremely popular player among Lakers fans, home crowds in Los Angeles were known to chant, “Coooooooop” whenever he controlled the ball. The Lakers sometimes ran an alley-oop play for him that was dubbed the “Coop-a-loop.”

3. At 6’5″ and 174 pounds, the rail-thin Cooper, known for his knee-high socks, played point guard, shooting guard and small forward positions, although his defensive assignment was usually the other team’s best scorer.

4. An outstanding defender, Cooper made the First Team All-Defensive team five times and won the Defensive Player of the Year award in 1987, despite being the Lakers 6th man off the bench.

5. Cooper was a key contributor of the five Los Angeles Lakers championship teams during the 1980′s and played more than 500 consecutive games in his ironman NBA career. He was fueled by the critics, who told him, “You won’t be able to stand the rigors of the NBA.”

And-1: Coop was the head coach of the WNBA’s Los Angeles Sparks from 2000-2004 and 2007-2009. He guided the Sparks to back-to-back championships in 2001 and 2002.

Football enthusiasts will always remember Fox NFL analyst and former Baltimore Ravens head coach Brian Billick for his ability to lead the Ravens to Super Bowl XXXV Championship in 2001… But how did he create the opportunity to coach a team to a world championship?

Here are five fast facts about Billick you might not have been aware of:

1. After being cut by the San Francisco 49ers in 1977, Billick returned to his hometown of Redlands, Calif., and served as a volunteer wide receivers coach for the University of Redlands while splitting time at Redlands high school. He coached the high school team practice from 2 to 4 P.M. and then rushed over to the university for the college practice.

2. Billick worked as a graduate assistant at Brigham Young for one season (1978) before joining the 49ers as the assistant director of public relations for two years (1979–1980).

3. The Vikings made the playoffs in six of the seven seasons (1992-1998) Billick was with the Minnesota Vikings as an assistant coach. In ’98, the Vikings set a then NFL record for most points scored in a season (556) and set a team record with 41 touchdown passes.

4. He returned to coaching with San Diego State University, serving as the tight ends coach and recruiting coordinator for five seasons (1981–1985). After being named the offensive coordinator of Utah State University, Billick improved the second-worst offense in Division I-A into a top-10 offense in only three seasons (1986–1988).

5. During the 2000-01 season, Baltimore finished with a 12–4 record and earned its first playoff berth. Prior to reaching the playoffs, Billick forbade his players from using either the term “playoffs” or the term “Super Bowl,” with the idea of keeping them focused on winning each game instead of on their more distant prize. Billick felt this approach would help them reach that prize, and went so far as to fine Tony Siragusa for violating this rule.

Finally, here’s a link to Billick on the Dan Patrick Show earlier this morning, as well as making an appearance on The Herd With Colin Cowherd.
